The value of leadership coachingWhy do I need leadership coaching? Level Playing Field Myth Contrary to the elementary school teaching, everybody does not start on a level playing field in life. Most of us quickly learned in our teenage years that we live in a world of complex power struggles which directly impact our behavior and success in life. Leadership is based on human interactions and relationships to influence others to achieve a shared goal. A person who embodies leadership skills becomes a game changer and a key asset for themselves, their organization, and the greater community. An impactful leader reaps the benefits both professionally and personally by creating an intentional advantage in the skewed playing field of their own life. Traditionally Set Up For Success
Professional leadership positions in the USA have traditionally been dominated by White able bodied heterosexual middle/upper class cisgendered men and women. Due to the previously mentioned aspects of their identity, these “traditional” leaders have had more access to money, education, healthcare, and mentorship which set them up to best achieve their positions as leaders. This is reflected and perpetuated in America’s history through the development of academic institutions, health services, and governments where they continue to hold the highest leadership positions.
Professional Competitive Edge Not all of us were fortunate enough to be born with access to the resources and necessary experiences to professionally advance as far as we would like. Some of us have been fortunate to have had access to resources such as higher education, but struggle to be promoted, gain recognition from our supervisors/peers, or seal the deal on a seemingly impossible business project. Others of us have worked hard to secure high profile leadership positions and are now faced with the imposing task to implement organizational wide DEI change, which was not covered in the doctoral program from our alma mater. Times are changing as the growing demand for adaptable, empathetic, and authentic leaders are needed to serve the increasing diversity of today. Leadership coaching offers every person the opportunity to learn and develop professionally through exposure to new leadership knowledge, strategic skills acquisition, and methodical practice of relevant tools that are tried true in the arena of professional leadership. Leadership coaching is an investment in yourself that will enable you to excel as you increase your impact on others and the world around you. What is leadership coaching? Acquire Tools and Develop Skills Leadership coaching is the process of developing skills to influence others while achieving a shared goal with the support of a material expert (leadership coach). A leadership coach is similar to an athletic coach with a few differences. Both an athletic coach and leadership coach are experienced with the rules of the game, well versed in the complexities of internal and external impacting factors of the game, and possess a unique insight on how to bring out the best in each player while fostering large scope teamwork to benefit all. A leadership coach differs from an athletic coach by specializing in creating behavior change within a professional environment through intentional contact with a leader or team of leaders in relation to the scope of their work or specialized professional industry. A skillful leadership coach guides leaders by helping them to unlock their full potential. Access to Success YOUR Way Leadership coaching varies based on the needs and interest of each coach and thier client. There is no one right way to coach leadership and a single superior way to be a leader does not exist. The strength of leadership coaching and impactful leaders lies in the custom tailored approach each of us brings to the table. The method and frequency of coaching depends on how to best meet the needs of each client. Some common examples of coaching include weekly one on one coaching sessions, monthly workshops, or group facilitations/retreats. The general outcomes of impactful leadership coaching are to identify the needs of an individual, create a method with specific steps to follow, and evaluate results within scope. The main goal of leadership coaching is to empower a person to professionally develop the necessary hard and soft skills that they need for their continued success.
